This qualification prepares you to work, in a supervised capacity, with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the sector of Children’s Services.

Qualifications Required

You should have a particular interest and commitment to the care of young children. You will need to have gained a range of D and E grades at GCSE, with a minimum Grade D in English. Progression from the CACHE Foundation Award in Caring for Children is possible for those who have achieved a Distinction Grade.

More Information

This qualification is split into three stages; Award, Certificate and Diploma, with the Award and Certificate building towards the Level 2 Diploma. It is expected that most students will progress through the Award and Certificate to complete the Diploma in order to be able to work as an early years practitioner.

Unit 2: The Developing Child

Certificate
Unit 3: Safe, Healthy and Nurturing Environment for Children
Unit 4: Children and Play
Unit 5: Communication and Professional Skills within Childcare and Education

Unit 8: Play Activity for Children from Birth to 16 years

You will learn through a mixture of lectures and practical work experience. You will be required to attend college for three days a week and a work placement for two days per week. There will also be five block placement weeks spread across the year. Work placement settings may include day nurseries, nursery units, pre-schools and infant/primary schools.

Students are assessed continuously for the duration of the course through externally devised tasks, a multiple choice question paper, a portfolio of work and unit assignments. Your practical skills in caring for young children will also be continuously assessed by supervisors at your training placements.

The CACHE Level 2 Diploma serves as an excellent foundation from which to build further skills. Students who complete the Level 2 Diploma may be able to progress onto the CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education at Eastleigh College (dependant on Grade achieved and tutor recommendation), or study for an NVQ Level 3 via employment.

All students will study key skills in Communication, gaining an additional qualification valued by both employers and higher education establishments.

It is recommended that students purchase a course textbook, details of which can be obtained at the start of the course.

Students will also be required to have Criminal Records Bureau check carried out which is currently approximately £40, payable by the student.

Previous students who have studied the CACHE Diploma at Eastleigh College have progressed into a wide variety of early years childcare and education settings. Many ex-students now work in our training placements and act as supervisors and mentors to our current students. Students who have chosen to progress on to higher education have qualified in the areas of nursing, teaching, speech therapy and social work.
